How Distractions and Self-Medication Worsen Anxiety

Have you ever felt like you're just spinning your wheels trying to get a handle on anxiety? You're not alone. I remember my first panic attack like it was yesterday. I was clueless about what anxiety really was, let alone a panic attack. There I was, driving in the dead of a Minnesota winter, when suddenly I had to pull over, overwhelmed by an unexplainable fear, shaking, and eventually getting sick right there in the snow.

The False Comfort of Distractions and Self-Medication

Quick Fixes Aren't Fixes At All

In the aftermath of that first panic attack, I, like many others, turned to whatever could make that overwhelming feeling go away—even if just for a moment. Whether it was alcohol to dull the senses or cannabis to "relax," I thought I was managing my anxiety. But was I really? The truth hit hard: these were just temporary distractions. Instead of dealing with my anxiety, I was pushing it aside, only for it to come back stronger.

The Cycle of Avoidance

This cycle of seeking temporary relief only leads to more intense anxiety later. It's a common story: you feel anxious, you distract yourself with something that makes you feel better momentarily, and then, when the effect wears off, the anxiety is right there waiting for you, often worse than before.

Understanding Anxiety's True Nature

It’s Part of Our Survival Kit

Anxiety isn't just some modern inconvenience. It's hardwired into us for survival. It's what kept our ancestors on their toes, ready to react to danger. But sometimes, this survival mechanism goes into overdrive, making everyday situations feel like life-or-death scenarios.

Facing Anxiety Head-On

The turning point for me came with the realization that fighting anxiety like it's a cold or a fever isn't the answer. Anxiety is a part of us. It serves a purpose. But when it starts calling the shots, making us dread everyday situations, it's time to recalibrate.

The Role of Hypnosis in Managing Anxiety

My Journey to Control

When all the usual tactics failed, and my anxiety reached new heights following a bout of Bell's palsy and synkinesis, I knew I needed a different approach. That's when I found hypnosis. It wasn't about silencing my anxiety. It was about understanding it, accepting it, and learning to coexist with it. Hypnosis taught me to ground myself, to take control of the anxiety rather than let it control me.

The Power of Present Focus

Through hypnosis, I learned that much of anxiety comes from projecting our fears into the future, worrying about what might happen. But the future is a story we tell ourselves, and our subconscious doesn't distinguish between reality and imagination. By focusing on the now—on what's real—hypnosis helped me change my body's response to anxiety.

Why I Became a Hypnotist

Helping Others Find Their Path

My journey through anxiety to a place of understanding and control is why I became a hypnotist. I've lived through the hell that unchecked anxiety can create, and if I can help even one person avoid that, then I know I'm doing what I'm meant to do. Seeing the change hypnosis can bring into someone's life, helping them move from a place of fear to one of empowerment, is why I love what I do.

Taking the First Step

If anxiety has you feeling like you're constantly fighting an uphill battle, know that there's a way out that doesn't involve temporary fixes or avoiding the issue. Hypnosis offers a path to understanding, accepting, and ultimately controlling your anxiety.

And to anyone out there trying to navigate their way through anxiety, I'm here to tell you: there's hope. You don't have to do this alone. If you're ready to take control of your life again, reach out. Let's talk about how we can work together to turn the page on anxiety. Remember, distractions and self-medication may seem like they're helping, but they're only adding to the problem. Facing anxiety, understanding it, and learning to manage it through methods like hypnosis, is the real path to regaining control of your life. Don't let temporary fixes keep you from facing the issue head-on. Your future self will thank you for it.

I recently had the honor of being a guest on the Work Smart Hypnosis Podcast with Jason Linett where I got to share some of my story about how I became a hypnotist, my perspectives on hypnotic change work and why I believe that difficult situations we find ourselves in aren't problems but opportunities for change, growth, and personal transformation.

My Story

In the beginning

For far too long, I had a bad case of the "sposetas." I was living my life based on what I thought I was "sposeta" do, and not living for myself. When there is a conflict between the emotional and logical mind, the emotional mind will always win. This is when I first started struggling with anxiety - because I wasn't living my life in a way that was authentic to myself. So I changed, and I thought I had those old anxiety issues under control until...

And then..

In 2014, I had Bell's palsy, and things never went back to normal. I had basically given up on life. My anxiety went through the roof and I would have constant panic attacks any time I went out in public, so I quit going out. I barely ever saw my friends, became agoraphobic, and gained a ton of weight. Which of course made everything much worse! I didn’t just lose all hope - I lost myself.

My Breakthrough

I knew that wasn't who I was, and eventually enough was enough. I was determined to take back control of my life, and no longer be a prisoner of anxiety. That is how I discovered hypnosis. Thanks to hypnosis, I was able to take back control of my life and not only regain my confidence - but dramatically increase it. Now, the very idea of having a panic attack is as foreign to me as it was before I ever even heard of the term let alone experienced one.

Why I Do What I Do

I became a hypnotist because nobody should have to go through what I did on my journey. And if there is a silver lining to it then that is I can use the wisdom I gained to give others the tools they need to keep growing and succeeding - so I can help others free themselves from whatever old stories they've been telling themselves that kept them stuck. Nobody should have to go through what I did and I want the world to know that nobody has to.

YOU CAN UNLEASH THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF

We are all not that different

Use this section to address concerns someone might have about YOU - which they think makes you unique, special, or have super powers? Explain to them that you are just a person. You are human just like them and if YOU can do it, so can they. It doesn't take magic or mystical wisdom to achieve success and victory.
